Persistence of Vision
About persistence of vision.
The human eye forms an image on the retina – the light sensitive part – and transfers information about the image to the brain. Just like film in a camera, this process involves chemical reactions. The light falling on the retina stimulates nerves and it takes time for each stimulation to clear. Normally we don’t look at one thing for a long period, so further stimulation happens, over-riding the last image about 20 times a second. As the name suggests, Spacewriter displays and products such as the handheld LTC123 (pictured above left) generate strong, vibrant and most of all compelling images by moving point sources of light rapidly in front of the viewer – thereby creating stunning text, images and colourful animations which appear to vividly ‘Float’ in Space.
